Welcome to Paradise
Rouge Park

Although there are numerous parks in Ajax, the largest urban park in North America and Canada’s first national park in an urban area is just minutes away in Pickering. Established in 1995 by the Province of Ontario, the 40 km2 Rouge Park will in due course double in size to nearly 80 km2, making it 19 times larger than Stanley Park in Vancouver and 50 times larger than Toronto’s High Park.

Quite simply, the Rouge is the behemoth of urban green spaces. Comprising much of the Rouge River watershed, the park’s extraordinary biodiversity includes over 1,700 different species of plants and animals. And that’s only the tip of its extraordinary attractions. Others include one of the last remaining working farms in the Greater Toronto Area, one of the last remaining Carolinian forests in the country, one of the region’s largest marshes—-perfect for kayaking–unspoiled beaches, 12 km. of rustic hiking trails and some of the oldest known Indigenous sites in the country, many dating back 10,000 years.

The Rouge River is the most ecologically healthy river in the GTA and with much of its watershed now protected parkland it’s likely to remain so for generations to come.
For anyone who loves nature, Welcome to Paradise.
